ACEN Student Scholarships at Flinders University in Australia for 2022/2023

Every year, ACEN Student Scholarships are awarded to provide financial support for students undertaking a WIL placement in a regional or remote area of Australia as part of their university studies. After the completion of the placement, applicants are expected to reflect on the WIL experience which should identify the personal growth and skill development as a result of the WIL placement and evidence of the ability to think critically and question biases and assumptions.

Keep reading as we discuss the ACEN Student Scholarships, their worth, eligibility, and application process.

Flinders University is a public research university in Adelaide, South Australia. Established in 1966, the university was named in honor of British navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the South Australian coastline in the early 19th century.

The university is a prolific university and a member of the Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Group. Academically, Flinders University pioneered a cross-disciplinary approach to education, and its faculties of medicine and the humanities have been rated among the nation’s top 10.

The 2021 Times Higher Education ranking of the world’s top universities ranks Flinders University in the 251 – 300th bracket. However, by the late 1950s, the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus was approaching capacity. In 1960, Premier Thomas Playford declared that 150 hectares (370 acres) of state government-owned land in Burbank (now Bedford Park) would be allocated to the University of Adelaide for the foundation of a second campus.

Planning started in 1961. The principal designate of the new campus, economist and professor Peter Karmel, was rigid that the new campus should operate independently from the North Terrace campus. He also hoped that the Bedford Park campus would be free to inaugurate and not be bound by tradition.

Capital works started in 1962 with a grant of £3.8 million from the Australian Universities Commission. Architect Geoff Harrison, in collaboration with architectural firm Hassell, McConnell, and Partners, designed a new university that, with future enlargement, could eventually accommodate about 6000 students

A bill was passed on the 17th of March 1966 by state parliament officially creating the Flinders University of South Australia. Although the Labor Party had favored the name the University of South Australia, academic staff wished that the university be named after a different but uncontroversial person. They then settled upon British navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the South Australian coastline in 1802.

Flinders University’s coat of arms, designed by a professor in the Fine Arts faculty, includes a reproduction of Flinders’ ship Investigator and his journal A Voyage to Terra Australia, open to the page in which the university described the coast adjacent to the campus site.

On the 25th of March 1966, Flinders University was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The first Vice-Chancellor for the university was Peter Karmel and Sir Mark Mitchell the first Chancellor. The university started classes on 7 March 1966 with a student enrollment of 400.

Since 2000 the university has set up new disciplines in areas which include Physiotherapy, Occupational Ther, apy and more disciplines of Engineering.
