About Cambridge Trust
The Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust were combined to become the Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust on August 1, 2013. These were created as charitable organizations by the University of Cambridge in the 1980s to offer financial assistance to foreign students enrolled in degree programs at Cambridge.
The Cambridge Trust gladly provides:
- Cambridge International Scholarships – for candidates from nations except the United Kingdom or Ireland
- Vice-Chancellor’s Awards – for those UK and Irish citizens who must pay fees at the domestic rate
candidates who will do PhD-level research at the University of Cambridge in the upcoming academic year.

The Cambridge International Scholarships and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards are designed to provide complete financial assistance for PhD study to the top candidates, regardless of nationality. The scholarships cover the cost of the university composition fee as well as a living expense grant for one individual.
The offer of an award from the Trust will expire if a student wins a full-tuition scholarship from any source (except Gates Cambridge and Harding), and you will be given the title of “Honorary Trust Scholar.” This has no monetary value but gives you access to the Trust’s events. Any offer of an award from the Trust, including those granted with an Honorary status, shall immediately expire if you have accepted a Gates Cambridge Scholarship or a Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria for Cambridge Trust International Scholarships and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards
All Ph.D. applicants from all fields will be included on one graded list created by a university committee. Academic credentials, references, and research potential are the only considerations in developing this list. The choice of scholarship awardees is made without regard to the applicant’s financial circumstances.
Candidates must have the intention of enrolling in a course at the level of:
- Research postgraduate (such as PhD)
The Trust does not provide MBA or MFin programs with full-cost scholarships. The Trust will take into consideration co-funding MBA and MFin students who are proposed to the Trust by financing partners (who may have their application processes).
The Trust is unable to provide financial aid for part-time MSt programs at any University Department. Please be aware that MSt and MASt courses are not the same thing.

Interview Date, and Process for Cambridge Trust International Scholarships & Vice-Chancellor’s Awards
The Trust’s awards season, which lasts from March to the end of July, is a continuous procedure. The entire awards are typically given out in March. When offers are turned down, they occasionally may be able to re-offer them elsewhere. Some of the partner-funded rewards might take some time. If you are chosen to receive one of these honors, you will be notified.
The Trust will, when appropriate, recommend recipients of Vice-Chancellor’s Awards and Cambridge International Scholarships to other full-cost awards with partner organizations, UK Research Councils, Departments, or Colleges, who are willing to contribute either the full amount or part of the scholarship’s cost. Where just a portion of a scholarship’s cost is provided, the Trust will cover the remaining amount.
Application Process for Cambridge Trust International Scholarships and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards
Applicants must log in or register for the scholarship by either 5 December 2023 or 4 January 2024, depending on which deadline applies to their program, if they want to begin their Ph.D. the following academic year. Refer to the section under ‘Application & Funding Deadlines’ on the Postgraduate Admissions homepage. Both applicants from the UK and abroad must meet these deadlines. These dates are for courses beginning in the Michaelmas Term (October 2024), Lent Term (January 2025), and Easter Term (April 2025) respectively.
Everyone applying should complete the financing component of the online application form through the Applicant Portal by checking the box that says they want to be considered for funding and by filling out the Cambridge Trust section.
