In Cardiff, Wales, there is a public research university called Cardiff University (Welsh: Prifysgol Caerdydd). It was founded in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire and, in 1893, it was designated as one of the University of Wales’ foundation colleges. In 1988, it united with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST) to become the University of Wales College, Cardiff, which later changed its name to the University of Wales, Cardiff. Degree-granting authority was granted to it in 1997, but it did not use it. In 1999, it chose Cardiff University as its operating name; in 2005, it made this name its legal one and started issuing its degrees independently.
