- Candidate for the award program should put forward an unpublished legal article/paper in English or Spanish written wholly by that candidate.
- Only one submission is permitted per candidate in either language.
- Applicants for the Award program should hold a law degree and have proven experience in international human rights law.
- Previous Winners are not eligible to submit essays in future competitions.

- Essays should make use of Times New Roman font, 12-point double-spaced for the body of the essay and 10-point single-spaced for footnotes.
