The University of Exeter is a public research university in Exeter, Devon, South West England, United Kingdom. The university’s forerunner institutions, St Luke’s College, Exeter School of Science, Exeter School of Art, and the Camborne School of Mines were founded in 1838, 1855, 1863, and 1888 respectively.

These institutions later formed the University of Exeter after receiving its royal charter in 1955. In post-nominals, the University of Exeter is abbreviated as Exon. (from the Latin Exoniensis), and it is the suffix given to honorary and academic degrees from the university.

The University of Exeter has four campuses which are Streatham and St Luke’s both of which are in Exeter; and Truro and Penryn both of which are in Cornwall. The university is originally based in the city of Exeter, Devon, where it is the principal higher education institution.

However, the university is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities and is also a member of Universities UK, the European University Association, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities and an approved institution of the Association of MBAs (AMBA).

In the main ratings of universities in the United Kingdom, the university is currently rated between 10th and 12th. In The Sunday Times 10-year (1998–2007) average rating of British universities based on constant league table performance, the University of Exeter was rated joint 26th overall in the UK.

For 2016, the University of Exeter climbed to 7th place in the UK by The Times, 9th place by The Guardian, and 10th place by The Complete University Guide. Entering the Times Higher Education World University Rankings Top 200 world universities for the first time in 2010/2011 (in 184th place), the university increased its global standing in 2011/2012, by rating in 156th place and featuring amongst the top 1% of universities in the world.

In the 2015/16 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the University of Exeter placed 93rd. In addition, the university was rated 34th on the annual list of the top 500 major universities worldwide in the Leiden Rankings 2015.

In the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2020 Subject Rankings, the university rated 11th in the world for public administration. In the QS World University Subject Rankings 2020, the University of Exeter rated 10th in the world for sport and health sciences and 14th for engineering in minerals and Mining.

Worth of University of Exeter College of Humanities Global Excellence Studentship

The studentship will be available for a period of up to 3 years (36 months), dependent on satisfactory progress, and will cover full tuition fees and an annual maintenance grant of £15,609.

Eligibility for University of Exeter College of Humanities Global Excellence Studentship

  • Successful candidates normally have a good first degree of at least 2.1, or international equivalent in a relevant field of humanities, and have acquired, or are currently working towards a Master’s degree at Merit level, or international equivalent, in a related field of humanities.
  • If English is not your first language you will need to meet the English language requirements and provide evidence of proficiency to be qualified for the University of Exeter College of Humanities Global Excellence Studentship.
  • Note that candidates would be expected to start their studies in September 2022. Students are expected to commit to engagement beyond their doctoral studies through contributing to the research environment of their discipline and the College by participating in research activities, accessing skills development training and opportunities, career development, etc.
