About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The idea of establishing a university in Queensland was first proposed in the 1870s. A significant step in this direction occurred in 1874 when a Royal Commission, chaired by Sir Charles Lilley, recommended the immediate creation of a university. However, there was opposition to the idea, with some arguing that technical education, rather than traditional academic education, held more significance in an economy primarily driven by the agricultural industry. To counter this opposition, those advocating for the university distanced themselves from the models of Oxford and Cambridge, instead proposing a system inspired by the mid-western states of the United States.
A second Royal Commission in 1891 played a pivotal role by recommending the inclusion of five faculties in the new university: Arts, Law, Medicine, Science, and Applied Science. Nonetheless, education was not a high priority in Queensland’s budget at the time. In a colony where the literacy rate stood at 57% in 1861, primary education took precedence over secondary and technical education. Consequently, the government was reluctant to allocate funds for the establishment of a university.
In 1893, the Queensland University Extension Movement was initiated by a group of private individuals. They organized public lecture courses in adult education, aiming to garner broader community support for a university in Queensland. By 1894, the extension classes had 245 enrolled students, and the lectures were praised for their practicality and usefulness.
In 1906, the University Extension Movement organized the University Congress, which provided a platform for delegates interested in promoting the concept of a university. This event mobilized public opinion, initiated a fund, and prepared a draft Bill for the establishment of a Queensland University. The emphasis was placed on the practical aspects of university education and its significance for Queensland’s commerce. The Congress’s proceedings were subsequently forwarded to Premier Kidston, and in October 1906, a sixty-acre area in Victoria Park was earmarked for university purposes.
The University of Queensland has demonstrated a strong commitment to research, particularly in the fields of science, medicine, and technology. Notably, UQ Professor Ian Frazer played a pioneering role in the development of cervical cancer vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix. In 2009, the Australian Cancer Research Foundation recognized UQ’s leadership in various areas of cancer research.
Established in 2021 by Duchesne College as part of the Create Change Scholarship Match Initiative, the Duchesne College Residential Scholarship offers annual endowment distributions to students facing financial hardships. The scholarship’s primary purpose is to assist students with the cost of residential fees at Duchesne College. It is an integral component of the UQ Residential Scholarships Scheme. You only need to submit one application to be evaluated for all scholarships in this scheme.

Eligibility Criteria for Duchesne College Residential Scholarship
Applicants are advised to meet the following prerequisites to be qualified for the Duchesne College Residential Scholarship at the University of Queensland:
- You are a domestic student.
- You can demonstrate financial need.
- You are a commencing student with no prior tertiary study at a bachelor’s level or above.
- You intend to be a resident at Duchesne College.
- You are enrolled or intend to enroll, in any program at UQ in the year the scholarship is awarded.
Selection Criteria
The university will take into account your financial need when considering your application. Preference will be given to candidates who meet the following criteria, in the following order of priority:
- If you come from a rural or regional area, you may receive preference for the scholarship.
- First in the family: Candidates who are the first in their family to pursue higher education will be considered with preference.
- Satisfied QTAC’s Educational Access Scheme assessment about English language proficiency: If you have met the Educational Access Scheme assessment related to English language proficiency conducted by QTAC, you may also receive preference.

Interested and eligible applicants should apply by using the online application portal. Each applicant will need the following:
- your QTAC reference number
- evidence of financial hardship such as Centrelink statements, ATO statements, family income, etc.
- regional/rural/remote residency
