Howard and Gladys Sleath Scholarship at UQ in Australia 2021

The Howard and Gladys Sleath Scholarship award is granted to the Bachelor of Music (Honours) candidate displaying the highest merit in an audition on an orchestral stringed appliance played with a bow.

The Howard and Gladys Sleath Scholarship was established in 1998 by a bequest by Howard Sleath of 50% of his estate to The University of Queensland. Mr Howard Sleath was renowned to instrumentalists all through Australia for the distinction of his craftsmanship and talent as a maker of stringed instruments.

Mr Sleath bestowed the State of Queensland a string quartet of instruments to be kept under the management of the Head of the School of Music. The instruments were first used by the Mayne String Quartet at a performance to initiate the Howard Sleath Quartet of Instruments in 1974.

The successful candidates for the Howard and Gladys Sleath Scholarship award will obtain the award sum of $7000 to finish their education in Australia.

Eligibility for Howard and Gladys Sleath Scholarship at UQ

An applicant is eligible for the Howard and Gladys Sleath Scholarship, if the applicant:

• auditions on an orchestral stringed instrument played with a bow for the Bachelor of Music (Honours) program to the Head, by the closing date for applications;
• Applicants must be new currently enrolled student, or intends to be, enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.
• Applicants will be enrolled full-time in the first year of the program.
• Candidates must meet all UQ’ English language adeptness criteria.
• Applicants must have previous academic results with good marks.

How to Apply for Howard and Gladys Sleath Scholarship at UQ

If you are looking to apply for this scholarship scheme, then you have to secure admission in an undergraduate degree at the University of Queensland. This scholarship award is granted to candidates for the Bachelor of Music (Honours) based on their audition results. They do not require a separate application.

Selection criteria

The scholarship award is granted to the candidate displaying greatest merit as proven by audition.

Terms and conditions

The scholarship is tenable for one year and paid in two instalments.

The first payment will be paid after the registration date in Semester 1 dependent on the beneficiary being enrolled full-time in the program.

The second payment will be paid after the registration date in Semester 2 dependent on the beneficiary:

• Continuing to be enrolled full-time in the program; and
• Attaining a GPA of a minimum of 5 in Semester 1.

If the beneficiary fails to satisfy the above rules, the beneficiary has to show cause to the Head why the scholarship award should not be revoked.
