Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand for 2022/2023

A fully funded Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters Scholarship is available to work with Dr. Yvette Perrott at Victoria University of Wellington on research into the intracluster medium of galaxy clusters. Currently, the use of galaxy clusters as precision cosmological probes is limited by its poor understanding of how the easily-observable gas component relates to the dark-matter-dominated total mass.

The Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters Scholarship will involve investigating flexible yet robust methods for extracting cluster gas pressure profiles from Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect data using the current and next-generation instruments and investigating ways of modeling non-thermal pressure and its connection to synchrotron radio emission.

Victoria University of Wellington is a university in Wellington, New Zealand. The university was founded in 1897the  by Act of Parliament and was a constituent college of the University of New Zealand. The university is famous for its programs in law, the humanities, and some scientific disciplines, and offers a wide range of other courses.

However, entry to all courses in the first year is open, and entry in the second year in some programs (e.g. law, criminology, creative writing, architecture, engineering[8]) is restricted. Victoria University of Wellington had the highest average research grade in the New Zealand Government’s Performance-Based Research Fund exercise in both 2012 and 2018, having been rated 4th in 2006 and 3rd in 2003.

The Victoria University of Wellington has been rated 215th in the World’s Top 500 universities by the QS World University Rankings. The university was named after Queen Victoria, on the 60th anniversary of her coronation. Its original name was Victoria University College, but on the termination of the University of New Zealand in 1961 Victoria or Vic became the Victoria University of Wellington, conferring its degrees.

In 1868, the colonial government of New Zealand passed the Victoria University of Wellington Endowment Act of 1868, which founded scholarship programs for study in the home islands of Great Britain, in addition to setting aside a land endowment in the burgeoning colony itself. The year after, with wealth generated from the Otago Gold Rush in addition to a strong establishment of the Scottish Enlightenment, the provincial government of Otago proceeded to lay the groundwork to set up the University of Otago. This was then followed by the formation of Canterbury College, associated with the newly formed University of New Zealand.

Furthermore, in 1878, a royal commission was appointed to review the state of higher education in the country. It recommended the foundation of a federal system of four university colleges, founded in Auckland and Wellington, in addition to the incorporation of the University of Otago and Canterbury College.

Hence, the colonial government moved to provide sites, statutory grants, and land endowments. This was somehow delayed after the state of recession caused by the collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank in the same year, leading to a contraction in credit from Great Britain, and particularly London, the center of global finance at the time.

Worth of Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters Scholarship

All successful candidates for the Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters Scholarship will receive a tax-free stipend of NZD 27,500 per year as well as payment of all university tuition fees and funding to attend international conferences (if possible). Note that the scholarship is to be awarded for three years.

Eligibility for Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters Scholarship

• The perfect applicant for the Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters Scholarship will have a strong background in astronomy and/or general physics.
• Note that Familiarity with radio astronomy, Bayesian statistics, and computational skills will also be an advantage, but not vital.
• To be qualified for the scholarship, you must meet the entry requirements for the doctoral program at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
