The university is a public research university based within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, in South West London, England. Kingston University’s history can be traced back to the Kingston Technical Institute which was established in 1899.

In 1975, the university joined with the Gipsy Hill College of Education, integrating the college’s faculty into Kingston’s Division of Educational Studies. The Guardian rated Kingston University 40th out of 128 surveyed universities.
The Times/The Sunday Times Guide rated the university at no. 102 (Good University Guide, 2018). In 2018, Kingston University was rated 1st out of 121 institutions for its graphic design and product design courses by The Guardian in 2017.
The university’s main campus Penrhyn Road is based close to Kingston town centre. Students based at the campus study: Arts and Social Sciences, Computing and Information Systems and Mathematics, Civil Engineering, Statistics, Biosciences, Pharmacy, v Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science, and Radiography. The development at this site has expanded it to the Learning Resources Centre.
Kingston University won The Guardian University Award for teaching excellence in 2017. The university is rated as one of the top 40 universities in the UK by The Guardian University Guide 2020, it was rated in the top 250 in the world for Business & Economics by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019 and placed in the top 140 Global MBA rank according to QS World University Rankings (2020).
