Mathematics in Industry and Commerce Scholarships in PhD for Developing Countries at DAAD Germany for 2022

This program provides the opportunity to do a PhD in applied mathematics. Every year, four to five new scholarship holders can be selected for the program. One condition for funding is that the countries of origin of the scholarship holders are grouped as developing countries according to the OECD, which means they are listed in the annually updated DAC list.

In the program, the doctoral applicants preferably work on mathematical modeling problems that are directly related to their home country. However, the optimal control of water networks or traffic flows, quitting problems, development of earthquake-resistant concrete parts, replication of the spread of diseases or new methods of financial and actuarial mathematics are only a few of the many fields of research. Note that all research groups of the department accept candidates for the Mathematics in Industry and Commerce program.

DAAD was established in 1925 and it is the largest German support organization in the field of international academic co-operation. The university is a private, federally funded and state-funded, self-governing national agency of the institutions of higher education in Germany which represents 365 German higher education institutions “100 universities and technical universities, 162 general universities of applied sciences, and 52 colleges of music and art”.

The institution itself does not offer programs of study or courses, but it awards competitive, merit-based grants for use toward study and/or research in Germany at any of the approved German institutions of higher education.

DAAD also awards grants to doctoral students, German students, and scholars for studies and research abroad. The institution is the largest academic grant organization worldwide with an annual budget of 522 million Euros and supporting approximately 140.000 individuals all over the world.

The institution closed down in 1945 and was re-established again in 1950. DAAD scholarship grants which is controlled by the DAAD abroad are available to students of all academic disciplines and at each academic degree level which includes undergraduates, graduating undergraduates and recent graduates with a BA, master’s degree students, doctoral students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral scholars, and faculty.

DAAD worldwide network includes about 50 information centers and almost 450 DAAD lecturer positions.

The Mathematics in Industry and Commerce Scholarships covers the travel expenses, cost of living, health insurance subsidy, and generous support for accompanying family members to all successful candidates.

Eligibility for Mathematics in Industry and Commerce Scholarships

  • To be qualified for the scholarship, you need an excellent Master’s degree in mathematics and very good knowledge of the English language.
  • Each candidate must belong to one of the eligible countries of origin.
  • To be qualified for Mathematics in Industry and Commerce Scholarships, you need two years of relevant professional experience.
  • Note that only candidates who have been in Germany for a maximum of one year at the time of application, that is who have been in Germany for a maximum of two years at the start of the program, can receive funding.
