O’Brien Fellowship at Marquette University in USA 2022

Marquette University in the United States provides the O’Brien Fellowship program for journalists who spend nine months reporting stories with the potential to compel change in 2022.

Sponsored by Marquette University, the O’Brien Fellowship program assists news experts to dig deep while mentoring student journalists.

The program pays respect to Marquette alumni Alicia and Perry O’Brien. Their daughter, Patricia Frechette, and her spouse, Peter, bequeathed $8.3 million in 2012 to establish the fellowship. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is a co-founder and associate.

O’Brien Fellows carry out an in-depth reporting project of their choice on a topic of state, regional, national or global interest across two academic semesters.

• Formerly, most Fellows have operated from a home base in the O’Brien newsroom in the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Because of COVID-19, they are taking applications for remote, partial residency and full residency options. 
• Mentor and work with top Marquette journalism candidates in the pursuit of a fact-finding or descriptive journalism project.

Worth of O’Brien Fellowship at Marquette University

An allowance of $70,000 for nine months for your salary, disbursed to your sponsoring establishment, or straight to the fellow in the case of independent journalists.

• A residency stipend based on family needs for fellows residing to the Milwaukee metropolitan area for the period of the fellowship program: up to $4,000 for a single, married or partnered candidate, up to $6,000 for a candidate with one child, up to $7,000 for a candidate with two children, up to $8,000 for a candidate with three or more offspring. Fellows hand in rent receipts from the rental property landlord. The stipend is paid in equal monthly installments over the duration of the fellowship program.
• A relocation stipend based on family size and distance. The stipend, providing the journey to and from Milwaukee, varies from $2,000 to $4,000 in total. (Fellows from the Milwaukee municipal area are not qualified for a relocation  allowance.)
• A travel and research grant up to $8,000. This provides project-related travel and also technology, data and document expenses and equipment requirements.
• Worker benefits continue to be remitted by the candidate’s employer, where applicable. Please get in touch with them if you have questions on this.
• Candidates and their partners are qualified during the fellowship program for tuition remission (up to seven credits) for programs offered by Marquette University.

Eligibility for O’Brien Fellowship at Marquette University

• Staff-employed or autonomous journalists are welcome.
• Candidates are required to have minimum of five years of professional experience and produce journalism constantly as a staff or freelancer.
• Candidates may be linked to print operations, television, radio, podcasts, websites, wire services, online publications, or magazines of general public interest.
• There are no academic requirements.
• Applications from foreign journalists are welcome.

Method 1 (Preferred)

• They make out space in their official online application form for you to connect to your supporting files from a file sharing service like Dropbox or Google Drive, or from your individual or company’s website.
• This enables them to access your materials online.
• This is their preference.

Method 2

• If you are not able to submit a link to your materials, you have the option to email them to the school at obrienfellows@marquette.edu with the subject “O’Brien Application Materials: Your Name.”

Method 3

• As a last option, they will take physical copies of materials at the mailing address specified on their website. These materials will not be returned to you.
• Please notify the school before sending them.

An advisory committee comprising esteemed journalists and Marquette faculty and alumni will interview applicants for O’Brien fellowship program in Feb. 2020 from a collection of finalists recommended by College of Communication journalism faculty.
