An extraordinary young journalist with a career in journalism has an unmatched chance thanks to the Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship: a nine-month fellowship at Durham University that includes working on an investigative project within a newspaper, which may be in London, New York, or Toronto. While being supervised by Durham University and having access to university faculty members and research resources, the Fellow will get mentoring from editors at Reuters or other media partners. The goal of this Fellowship is to provide the Fellows the chance to hone their rigorous, fact-based research and reporting abilities.
The Fellowship offers the chance to forge ideas and partnerships within a vibrant community of journalists with the assistance of top-tier scholars from across the world. As soon as possible after March 1, 2024, the 2024 Fellowship is expected to begin, assuming that all relevant immigration requirements have been met.
The selected applicant will be employed by Durham University to serve as a Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS). With the help of colleagues in the IAS, the Fellow will be expected to identify and create a network of academics throughout the University to support their investigative journalism practice. To share their findings from the Fellowship and further the University’s understanding of journalism, the Fellow will give a public seminar at the IAS.
The Fellowship receives a pro-rata income of around £53,333 per year, or about £4,444 per month. A monthly living allowance of £1,250 and a lump sum payment of £1,800 for travel and associated costs are also included.
Durham University will, under certain conditions, pay up to £12,000 to the successful applicant’s current employer to cover temporary staff costs when they are an existing employee of a news or media organization and take a period of leave to pursue the Fellowship.
Eligibility for Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship
Qualified applicants will have professional journalism experience from their early jobs.
- When a prospective applicant is not currently employed as a journalist but has experience in investigative reporting in a related field (for example, managing human rights or other socio-political publications and campaigns, working as an author or researcher on reputable investigative work, developing in-field photo- or video-research projects, documentaries, or exhibitions), applications may be taken into consideration on an individual basis.

Selection
