About the University of Stirling and Scholarship

After nearly 400 years, Scotland finally got a brand-new university when Stirling was founded. The initial campus location was chosen from a shortlist of potential locations, which also included Falkirk, Perth, and Inverness. In 1968, Lord Robbins, who had written the Robbins Review, which had called for an increase in the number of universities in the UK throughout the 1960s, was named as the institution’s first chancellor. The home that architects Morris and Steedman had created for university president Tom Cottrell was finished in 1967. In 2009, it was categorized as A.

Originally housing lecture halls, offices, and classrooms in addition to the distinctive “crush hall,” where the university showed its developing collection of modern Scottish art, the Pathfoot Building, which marked the first phase of construction on the campus, was finished in 1968. A tropical aquarium and a virology unit connected to the university’s Institute of Aquaculture were added to the building in 1979 and 1987, respectively. The Pathfoot Building was one of sixty important post-war Scottish sites chosen by the worldwide conservation organization DoCoMoMo in 1993. It was also chosen as one of Prospect’s top 100 Scottish contemporary structures.

It was also chosen as one of Prospect’s top 100 Scottish buildings of the contemporary era. Construction of the Cottrell Building, which was later given that name in honor of the university’s first president Cottrell, started in 1970. It consists of two parallel buildings connected by crosswalks and with courtyard gardens spaced throughout. The majority of the university’s administrative offices, lecture halls, departmental offices, classrooms, and computer labs are currently housed in the building. The Andrew Miller Building, a neighboring structure that was finished in 1971, is where the University Library, Atrium, and MacRobert Center are located.

Before 1992, Stirling was a mid-ranked UK university known for its excellent instruction and socially significant research. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, it is ranked second in the UK and 46th globally among the top 50 institutions under 50 years old. The Complete University Guide lists it among the top 40 universities in the UK.
