Northumbria University is a UK public university based in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East of England. The university has been a university since 1992, but has its origins in Rutherford College and was established in 1877.

The university is mainly based within City Campus located in Newcastle upon Tyne city center with other campuses based in Coach Lane, London, and Amsterdam. Northumbria University is organized into four faculties which are Business and Law, Design and Social Sciences, Engineering and Environment, and Health and Life Sciences.

As of 2019, Northumbria University has about 26,450 full-time students and 2,684 academic and research staff. The university is a member of AACSB, the Association of Commonwealth, Universities UK, and the Wallace Group.

Northumbria University is rated number one among UK universities in the Times Higher Education’s Young Universities Rankings (2020). The university holds the Silver Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

The university’s origin can be traced to three Newcastle colleges which are Rutherford College of Technology, which was founded by John Hunter Rutherford in 1877 and opened formally in 1894 by the Duke of York (later King George V), the College of Art & Industrial Design and the Municipal College of Commerce.

However, in 1969, the three colleges were amalgamated to form Newcastle Polytechnic. The Polytechnic became the major regional center for the training of teachers with the establishment of the City College of Education in 1974 and the Northern Counties College of Education in 1976.

In the UK Research Assessment Exercise in 2008, some research in nine of twelve areas submitted was described as world-leading. In the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise, Northumbria University was one of the UK top 50 for research power and the university which had risen fastest up the ratings.

Under Vice-Chancellor Andrew Wathey, Northumbria University has rated 27th place on The Guardian University league tables. The Times Higher Education World University Rating (2021) places the university in the 351-400 range.

Worth of The Qolcom Scholarships

The Qolcom Scholarships cover £2,000 cash during each student’s first year of Undergraduate study only.

Eligibility for The Qolcom Scholarships

  • To be qualified for the scholarship, each student should be a UK/Home candidate.
  • Each candidate must have achieved at least 144 points or equivalent from his/her best three qualifications, for example, AAA at A Level or DDD at BTEC to be qualified for The Qolcom Scholarships.
  • You should meet all individual entry requirements to be eligible for the scholarship.
  • You should also have a household income of under £40,000.
  • Note that the candidate should be a self-funded student to be qualified for The Qolcom Scholarships.
