University College Dublin is a public research university situated in Dublin, Ireland, and a member institution of the National University of Ireland. With 33,284 students, the university is Ireland’s largest university, and amongst the most reputable universities in the country. Five Nobel Laureates are among the university’s alumni and current and former staff.
The university originates in a body established in 1854, which opened as the Catholic univerUniversityeland on the Feast of Saint Malachy and with John Henry Newman as its first rector; it was re-formed in 1880 and chartered in its own right in 1908. The Universities Aof ct, 1997 renamed the constituent university as the National University of Ireland, Dublin, and a ministerial order of 1998 renamed the institution as University College Dublin – National University of Ireland, Dublin.
Originally situated at St Stephen’s Green in the Dublin city center, all University College Dublin’s faculties have since relocated to a 133-hectare (330-acre) campus at Belfield, four kilometers to the south of the city center.
The University College Dublin purchased a second site in Blackrock in 1991. The site currently houses the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. However, a report published in May 2015 showed the economic output generated by the University College Dublin and its students in Ireland amounted to €1.3 billion annually
However, the university can trace its history to the institution established in 1854 as the Catholic University of Ireland. The university became University College Dublin in 1908 under the Universities Act.
Since the 1780s, the University of Dublin had admitted Catholics to study; a religious test, however, obstructed the efforts of Catholics in their desire to acquire membership in the university’s governing bodies. Hence, in 1850 at the Synod of Thurles, it was decided to open a university in Dublin for Catholics. So as a result of these efforts, a new Catholic University of Ireland opened in 1854 on St Stephen’s Green, with John Henry Newman appointed as its first rector.
On the 3rd of November 1854, the Catholic University opened its doors on the feast of St Malachy. In 1855, the Catholic University Medical School was opened on Cecilia Street. As a private university, Catholic University was never given a royal charter, and so was unable to award regarded degrees and suffered from chronic financial difficulties.

Eligibility for University College Dublin ICAT Fellowships
- To be eligible for University College Dublin ICAT Fellowships, each candidate must be qualified to work in the Republic of Ireland or the United Kingdom at the time of application.
- You must be medical, dental, and veterinary specialties to be eligible for the scholarship.
How to Apply for University College Dublin ICAT Fellowships
The University College Dublin ICAT Fellowships has applied to the Health Research Board (HRB) for core funding for ICAT-2. The application calls for ICAT-2 fellows starting in 2022 are conditional on a successful outcome in the ongoing HRB review process and then receipt of a letter of offer from the HRB.
