The University of Westminster is a public research university located in London, United Kingdom. Established in 1838 as the Royal Polytechnic Institution, it was the first polytechnic to open in London. In August 1839, the polytechnic formally received a Royal charter and became the University of Westminster in 1992.

However, the university has its main campus in Regent Street in central London, with additional campuses in Fitzrovia, Marylebone, and Harrow. The University of Westminster also operates the Westminster International University in Tashkent in Uzbekistan.

The university is organized into three colleges and twelve schools, within which there are about 65 departments and centers, which include the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) and the Centre for the Study of Democracy.

The University of Westminster also has its Policy Studies Institute, Business School, and Law School. For 2017-2018, the university had an income of £205.1 million of which £22 million was from funding grants, research grants, and contracts.

In addition, the university is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of MBAs, EFMD, EQUIS, and the European University Association. The University of Westminster’s alumni includes a Nobel laureate in Medicine, the inventor of cordite, heads of state, politicians and mayors, Olympians, scientists, BAFTA- and Oscar-winning filmmakers, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Grammy Award-winning musicians, journalists, and poets.

The University of Westminster also offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees as well as certificates and diplomas at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Moreover, over two-thirds of Westminster’s programs are recognized by the proper professional bodies such as the BCS, BPS, CIOB, CABE, ICE, RICS, HPC, etc. regarding the high standards of relevance to the professions.

The university has so many centers of research excellence and was rated sixth in the UK and 40th globally for Media and Communications by QS World University Rankings 2018. The University of Westminster was also rated 15th for Art and Design in the UK, and 18th in the UK for Architecture. The Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2019, which lists the world’s best under 50-year-old universities out of 351 universities, rated the University of Westminster 151–200 in the world.

The University of Westminster obtained world-leading and internationally excellent status for most of its work, ranking second for Communications, Cultural and Media Studies research, 6th for Art and Design research, additionally to the university performing strongly in Architecture and the Built Environment, and Geography and Environmental studies.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, about 80% of the university submitted research across 20 subject areas that were judged to be of international quality. In 2013, the University of Westminster was rated joint second in the UK by the Architects’ Journal in their AJ Top 100 special issue.

The University of Westminster Vice-Chancellors Scholarships covers £5,000 per year towards maintenance costs or tuition fees up to a maximum of 3 years.

Eligibility for University of Westminster Vice-Chancellors Scholarships

  • To be qualified for the University of Westminster Vice-Chancellors Scholarships, you must hold a September 2022 course offer for a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Westminster.
  • Applicants must also have a household income of £25,000 or below as evaluated by the Student Loans Company.
  • Note that you are not qualified to apply for the scholarship if you already have an Honors degree.
  • The selection for the scholarship is based on financial needs and personal statements.
  • Each candidate must be from a Black or Mixed Black ethnic background. We also have other scholarships available for those who do not meet the criteria.
