About Royal Holloway University of London and Scholarship

Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL), formally known as Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, stands as a distinguished public research university and a proud member of the Federal University of London. With a campus located west of Egham, Surrey, approximately 19 miles from central London, RHUL boasts six schools, 21 academic departments, and a diverse student body comprising around 10,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students from over 100 countries. Recognized by The Sutton Trust as one of the 30 “most highly selective” British universities, RHUL has a rich history rooted in philanthropy and educational innovation.

Established in 1879 by the Victorian entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway, the Egham campus officially became Royal Holloway College in 1886. Originally an all-women college, it gained membership in the University of London in 1900. Over the years, the institution evolved to embrace inclusivity. In 1945, it admitted male postgraduate students, and in 1965, the first male undergraduates joined, marking a historic shift. The college took another transformative step in 1985 by merging with Bedford College, another former all women’s college in London. The merged entity was named Royal Holloway and Bedford New College (RHBNC). While this remains the official registered name by Act of Parliament, in 2022, RHUL achieved university status within the University of London.

The campus is notably graced by the Founder’s Building, a Grade I listed red-brick structure inspired by the Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley, France. RHUL has consistently demonstrated academic excellence, with an annual income of £201.1 million for 2021–22. Research plays a vital role, contributing £17.8 million in grants and contracts, while total expenditure amounted to £232.4 million.

Throughout its history, RHUL has been recognized for its commitment to preparing students for successful careers. At one point, it held the second position out of 90 universities in England and Wales for the number of students entering graduate employment. However, in recent years, there has been a shift, with a graduate prospect of 62.2% in 2016, ranking 77th out of 126 UK universities. Encouragingly, the graduate prospect has been on an upward trajectory, reaching 73.5%, according to the Complete University Guide 2020.

To further support students in the field of computer science, RHUL offers the Royal Holloway University of London Computer Science Scholarship. This scholarship is automatically provided to eligible students pursuing Masters courses within the Department of Computer Science. Indian nationals domiciled in India receive a £4,000 tuition fee reduction, while other eligible international students benefit from a £2,000 tuition fee reduction. Through initiatives like these, RHUL continues to foster academic excellence and provide opportunities for students to thrive in their chosen fields.
