About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The University of Queensland was founded by a State Parliament Act in 1909 and was officially formed on April 16, 1910, with the gazettal of appointees to the first UQ Senate. Teaching started in 1911 in the Old Government House on George Street in Brisbane. There were three faculties, Arts, Science, and Engineering, with 83 students (60 men and 23 women) in the first year.
Following World War I, the University grew fast and quickly exceeded its inner-city setting. An additional property in Victoria Park (currently used by the Medical School) was acquired in 1922. Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne supplied monies four years later to purchase the St Lucia property where the University’s main campus is presently located. Construction on the St Lucia site began in 1937, and the first structure afterward dubbed the Forgan Smith structure after the Premier at the time, was finished in 1939. It served as the forward headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific during WWII.
The University combined with the Queensland Agricultural College at (now Gatton), 80 kilometers west of Brisbane, in 1990, resulting in the combination of the State’s two oldest higher education institutions and a significant rise in enrolment. The previous Queensland Agricultural College originally admitted students in 1897, and the two schools had a long history of collaboration in teaching and research.
The Ethel Jean Wells Development Scholarship was created in her honor to assist Anatomy research.

- Any additional issues that the selection committee believes are pertinent to the applicant’s future research development.

Rules
This is a charitable HDR top-up award that follows the rules and requirements of Schedule A Postgraduate Research Scholarships. All beneficiaries of charitable scholarships must adhere to the criteria of UQ research and travel scholarships, including reporting and progress requirements.
Holders of these charitable scholarships are required to recognize them in any article published as a result of research undertaken while the scholarship was held.
Donors may also request the scholarship recipient to give a presentation on the work they did as part of the award, in which case the recipient must cooperate or risk losing the grant. The information you give in your application is used to (1) assess your eligibility for this award, (2) select scholarship winners, and (3) administer the scholarship. The University of Queensland may release the information you supply to the Donor for the purposes specified. The University will not otherwise release the information to a third party without your permission unless such disclosure is authorized or required by law. A domestic part-time student with caregiving obligations, a medical condition, or a handicap that prevents them from studying full-time may be eligible for scholarship consideration on a case-by-case basis.
