About Eastern Michigan University and Scholarship
Eastern Michigan University (EMU) stands as a beacon of academic excellence in Ypsilanti, Michigan, with a storied history dating back to its founding in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School. Serving as the fourth normal school in the United States and the first outside New England, EMU played a crucial role in advancing teacher education. The university underwent significant transformations over the years, evolving into the Michigan State Normal College in 1899 and attaining university status in 1959, ultimately adopting the name Eastern Michigan University.
As a distinguished institution classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity,” EMU is one of Michigan’s eight research universities. Governed by an eight-member board of regents appointed by the state governor and confirmed by the Michigan Senate, the university boasts a diverse academic landscape. It comprises eight colleges and schools, each contributing to the holistic educational experience offered by EMU. These include the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health and Human Services, GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, School of Music & Dance, the Honors College, and the Graduate School.

The university caters to a diverse student body, with a total enrollment exceeding 15,000 students. Offering a comprehensive range of degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels, EMU features more than 200 majors and minors for undergraduates and over 170 graduate programs.
In embracing the evolving landscape of education, EMU, like many large universities, champions online learning. The university provides a wide array of courses and degrees in virtual settings, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for its students. Beyond academics, EMU places a strong emphasis on student life outside the classroom, offering an extensive array of student-oriented facilities and activities.
The vibrant campus life at EMU encompasses a rich tapestry of experiences. From engaging plays and musicals to fostering student organizations and hosting social events, the university ensures a dynamic and inclusive campus experience. Notable campus hangouts, including the Student Center, The Rec/IM, Halle Library, and various dining facilities like the Eastern Eateries and the Commons (DC1), contribute to the vibrant atmosphere.
Campus Life at EMU orchestrates a plethora of co-curricular opportunities, from Friday night movies to the Laugh Lounge and Sky Lounge. Additionally, the university organizes occasional “Eastern Excursions” to cities such as Detroit, Cleveland, and Chicago, providing students with enriching experiences beyond the campus borders.
In commemorating the legacy of Dr. John Sullivan, a cherished professor of organic chemistry at EMU for forty-two years, the university administers the John Sullivan Endowed Scholarship through the Chemistry Club.
