About the University of Liverpool

The University of Liverpool, often abbreviated as UOL and locally known as The Uni of, is a public research university situated in Liverpool, England. Originally established as a college in 1881, it received its Royal Charter in 1903, granting it the authority to confer degrees. The University of Liverpool is recognized as one of the six ‘red brick’ civic universities, and it was the first to be referred to as The Original Red Brick. The university is organized into three faculties, which house 35 departments and schools. It is a founding member of the Russell Group and the N8 Group, which promotes research collaboration among universities. Additionally, the university’s management school holds triple-crown accreditation.

The institution boasts a prestigious alumni and faculty, including ten Nobel Prize winners. It offers over 230 first-degree courses covering 103 different subjects. Notable alumni of the University of Liverpool include the CEOs of companies like GlobalFoundries, ARM Holdings, Tesco, Motorola, and The Coca-Cola Company. The university holds the distinction of being the first in the UK to establish departments in oceanography, civic design, architecture, and biochemistry, notably at the Johnston Laboratories. In 2006, it created the world’s first Sino-British university, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, located in China.


For the fiscal year 2021–22, the University of Liverpool reported a turnover of £612.6 million, which included £113.6 million from research grants and contracts. It ranks seventh in terms of endowment size among English universities. Graduates of the University of Liverpool are recognized with the post-nominal letters Lpool to denote their affiliation with the institution.

In various university rankings, the University of Liverpool has received recognition. For example, it was ranked 31st out of 124 universities in the Complete University Guide 2013. The Times Good University Guide 2008 placed Liverpool 34th out of 113 universities. In 2010, The Sunday Times ranked the university 29th out of 122 institutions nationwide.

In international rankings, the THE-QS World University Rankings rated the University of Liverpool as the 99th best in the world in 2008 and the 137th best in 2009. In 2011, the QS World University Rankings positioned the university in 123rd place, an improvement of 14 spots. The Times Good University Guide 2013 ranked the University of Liverpool 29th in the UK. Furthermore, in the 2016 Round University Ranking, Liverpool is ranked 122nd globally and 15th in the UK.

The Liverpool Law School offers four bursaries for students enrolling in its taught LLM program. These bursaries are designed to assist students with their tuition fees and aim to attract top students from the UK, Europe, and internationally to join the expanding LLM program. There are two bursaries, each valued at £500, available to two students classified as ‘home students,’ and two bursaries, each valued at £1,000, available to two international students.
