About the University of Melbourne and Scholarship
In his inaugural Budget Speech on November 4, 1852, Hugh Childers, the Auditor-General and Finance Minister, proposed constructing the University of Melbourne. £10,000 was put aside by Childers for the construction of a university. The university was established by an act of incorporation on January 22, 1853, and was given the power to confer degrees in the humanities, law, medicine, and music. The legislation stipulated a £9,000 annual endowment, and structures were given a special £20,000 gift that year. Along with this one, the foundation stone for the State Library was laid on July 3, 1854. The first lessons were taught in 1855 by three professors, all of whom were Irishmen like the university’s founding chancellor, Redmond Barry.
There were sixteen pupils, however, only four of them were awarded diplomas. The first buildings were formally opened on October 3, 1855, by Sir Charles Hotham, the Colony of Victoria’s Lieutenant Governor.
A law school was established at Parkville in 1857, and then, in 1861 and 1862, schools of engineering and medicine were established there. On the northern portion of campus, the first residential colleges for the university were founded in 1872 and were divided among the four major Christian churches.
The first chancellor, Redmond Barry (named after Sir Redmond), held the position until he died in 1880. The wealth produced by the gold rush in Victoria made it possible to build the university. The organization was designed to have a “civilizing influence” during a time of rapid settlement and economic growth.
The institution comprises 11 academic departments, some of which provide graduate programs. In Australia, the university has the lowest overall attrition and retention rates and the highest. With a median undergraduate ATAR of 94.05 in 2009, the institution has one of the toughest entrance standards in the nation. The University of Melbourne accepted 50% of the Premier’s VCE Top All-Round High Achievers.
Bachelor’s degrees often need an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for domestic admissions. For undergraduate degrees in 2019, the following subjects have guaranteed admission scores: Agriculture (70), Arts (85), Biomedicine (96), Business (94), Design (85), Science (85), Oral Health (85) (only suggestive), Fine Arts (70), and Music (70).
The University of Melbourne was placed 14th (first nationally) in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. In the 2021–2022 edition of Times Higher Education’s annual World University Rankings, Melbourne was rated 33rd overall (first in Australia). According to SCImago Institutions Rankings, it had the 33rd spot among institutions worldwide in 2022. Melbourne placed first domestically and 29th worldwide in the most recent CWTS Leiden Ranking.
In the 2021 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) league table, the university was rated 33rd overall (first in Australia). The University of Melbourne is rated 10th in the field of law, 12th in the field of education, 16th in the field of accounting and finance, 17th in the field of social policy and administration, 19th in the field of sociology, 22nd in the field of environmental studies, and 23rd in the field of linguistics, according to the QS World University Subject Rankings 2020.
