About the University of Oxford and Scholarship

The University of Oxford, steeped in history and tradition, stands as one of the world’s oldest and most esteemed institutions of higher learning. Its educational heritage traces back to 1096, rendering it not only the oldest university in the English-speaking world but also the second-oldest continuously operating university worldwide.

A pivotal period of growth commenced in 1167 after King Henry II prohibited English students from attending the University of Paris. Subsequent disagreements between scholars and Oxford residents in 1209 led some academics to establish the University of Cambridge. Together, these two renowned institutions are often collectively referred to as Oxbridge.

The University comprises thirty-nine semi-autonomous constituent colleges and four permanent private halls. Additionally, it encompasses various academic departments organized into four divisions. These colleges are self-governing entities within the university, each governing its membership and possessing its internal framework and activities. All students are affiliated with a specific college.

Teaching at the undergraduate level at Oxford entails a combination of lectures, small-group tutorials held at the colleges and halls, seminars, laboratory work, and, occasionally, further tutorials offered by central university faculties and departments. Postgraduate teaching predominantly follows a centralized model. In 2022, the University of Oxford secured the 13th position in the Nature Index, a ranking that assesses the most significant contributors to papers published in 82 prestigious journals.
