The scholarship has a two-year value of $10,000 annually. Before the student’s third and fourth academic years, the scholarship also entails a paid 8–10 week work placement during the summer. The Clean Seas fish breeding and production facility at Arno Bay and the Clean Seas fish health and R&D teams in Port Lincoln are likely places where the job experience will be gained. Accommodations will be offered by Clean Seas. The student will work with Clean Seas on an appropriate project throughout their fourth year, and after that fourth year, Clean Seas could provide another chance for a work placement.

Eligibility Criteria for Playford Trust / Clean Seas Scholarship

Candidates are advised to meet the following conditions to be qualified for the Playford Trust / Clean Seas Scholarship at Flinders University:

  • set to start the third year of undergraduate studies and ready to enroll in one of the three public institutions in South Australia for a fourth year of aquaculture study.
  • ready to advance their industry and acquire new skills
  • involvement via completing an 8–10 week paid internship
  • placement before their third and fourth years of study over the summer break with Clean Seas
  • be passionate about sustainable aquaculture.
  • be an excellent communicator, possess a clear sense of purpose for the scholarship, be willing to represent Clean Seas in academic settings as an ambassador, and share Clean Seas’ values; additionally, the candidate must be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent resident visa and reside in South Australia.
  • wanting to work in South Australia for a substantial portion of their career, or being a high achiever with a stellar undergraduate record who might be beneficial to the State
  • of moral integrity. Students who show promise as leaders will be given priority.

Regional students—including those from the Eyre Peninsula—will be held in great esteem. It is important that the applicant’s supervisor or an academic reference—such as the lecturer, dean of the school, or faculty—give a positive assessment of the student’s accomplishments, moral qualities, and aptitude for leadership.

  • Students enrolled in any of the three South Australian institutions may submit nominations for consideration; the Trust retains the discretion to approve or reject submissions.
  • The Playford Trust and Clean Seas will collaborate to make the ultimate decision.
