Benefits:

The scholarships are worth $5,000 for first-, second, or third-year students and $10,000 for an honors student for a single year. The scholarship entails a paid summer work experience of eight to twelve weeks at Peak Iron Mines operations in far north South Australia. Peak Iron Mines will set up the job placement directly. Scholarship recipients will get payment for each work experience, and if they want to work on-site, they will be housed and fed at the Peak Iron Mines accommodation camp.

Eligibility Criteria for Playford Trust / Peak Iron Mines Scholarship

Applicants are advised to meet the following prerequisites to be qualified for the Playford Trust / Peak Iron Mines Scholarship at Flinders University:

  • Prepared to begin first, second, or third-year undergraduate studies in mining engineering, geology, geosciences, or environmental sciences at one of South Australia’s three public universities with honors
  • Ready to participate in a paid, 8–12 week summer work internship at Peak Iron Mines in far north South Australia to improve their industry engagement and skill development.
  • Able to secure permission to enter and operate within South Australia’s Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA)
  • A South Australian resident who is an Australian citizen and plans to live there for most of their career or who is expected to benefit the State
  • A top performer having an excellent undergraduate record
  • Of moral integrity. Students who show promise as leaders will be given priority.

A supporting statement regarding the applicant’s accomplishments, character, and leadership potential must be provided by the applicant’s supervisor or an academic referee (such as the dean of the school or faculty, a lecturer, or, for first-year students, a school referee).

Selection Criteria

Students enrolled in any of the three institutions in South Australia may submit nominations for consideration; the Playford Trust has the authority to accept, reject, or not accept any or all of the submissions. The Playford Trust and Peak Iron Mines will collaborate to make the ultimate decisions.
