About Flinders University and Scholarship

In the late 1950s, the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus was on the brink of reaching its capacity. Premier Thomas Playford addressed this concern in 1960 by announcing the allocation of 150 hectares (370 acres) of state government-owned land in Burbank (now Bedford Park) to the University of Adelaide for the establishment of a second campus.

The planning phase commenced in 1961, led by the principal-designate of the new campus, economist and professor Peter Karmel. Karmel was a strong advocate for the new campus to operate independently from the North Terrace campus, envisioning a space free to innovate without being constrained by tradition.

Capital works kicked off in 1962, supported by a £3.8 million grant from the Australian Universities Commission. Architect Geoff Harrison, in collaboration with the architectural firm Hassell, McConnell, and Partners, conceptualized a new university designed to accommodate up to 6000 students with potential for future expansions.

In 2019, the university unveiled plans for a significant investment, injecting an additional $100 million into research and education over five years to advance its strategic objectives. Simultaneously, a substantial development project named Flinders Village was announced for the northern portion of the Bedford Park Campus, adjacent to the Flinders Hospital precinct. This decade-long initiative is set to bring forth research facilities, student accommodation, commercial premises, and amenities.

In partnership with Chartwells, St Ann’s College, and the St Ann’s Foundation, the Playford Trust offers three scholarships specifically tailored for students residing at St Ann’s Residential College. This collaborative effort aims to support and nurture the academic pursuits of deserving students within the unique environment of St Ann’s Residential College.

The scholarships are available to:

  • a new student who is enrolling in the college,
  • a student who wishes to enroll for the first time or stay on campus, with priority given to an indigenous student. The same student may get this scholarship again in later years if they stay enrolled in their course and at St. Ann’s College.
  • a student who stays on campus at the institution.

Promising students wishing to study science, engineering, math, or technology at one of the three public institutions in South Australia are supported by these scholarships. The objective is to assist students in overcoming the financial and practical drawbacks of relocating to a rural area of South Australia for their home base.
