About the University of Glasgow

Why did you decide to enroll at the University of Glasgow? The University of Glasgow is a very intelligent institution, with a particular focus on providing its students with a stimulating intellectual atmosphere that helps culture, society, and the economy. It carries out cutting-edge research and motivates its pupils to define their career objectives and realize their full potential on personal and professional levels.

A public research university in Glasgow, Scotland is known as the University of Glasgow (abbreviated as Glas. in post-nominals; Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Ghlaschu). The fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland’s four ancient institutions, it was established by papal decree in 1451 [O.S. 1450]. The institution participated in the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century alongside the universities of St Andrews, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh. Like pre-modern institutions, Glasgow first served the requirements of students from affluent families.

However, in the 19th century, it distinguished itself by also serving the needs of students from the expanding urban and commercial middle class. Glasgow University helped all of these students by training them for careers in the legal, medical, government, educational, and religious spheres. A smaller but rising number of people were also trained for vocations in science and engineering. The university is a founding member of Universitas 21, an association of international institutions committed to establishing global standards for higher education, and it is a member of the Russell Group of research-driven British universities.

The institution now has more Regius Professorships than any other UK university with fifteen. Glasgow improved its position in the QS World University Rankings, moving up from 59th to 54th overall in 2011 to 51st in 2012 and 2013. Glasgow is ranked third in Scotland and among the top 20 cities in the UK for the employability of its graduates by the UK’s top employers.
