About State University of New York SUNY Geneseo and Scholarship
A law passed by the New York State Legislature allowed the Wadsworth Normal and Training School, the original SUNY Geneseo forerunner, to open its doors in 1867. But before it formally opened on September 13, 1871, the legislature altered the name of the new institution to the Geneseo Normal and Training School. However, the Geneseo Normal School was the only name retained once it was truncated in 1905.
Originally offering just two-year studies, the institution expanded to include three-year programs in 1922 and four-year programs in 1938. But it wasn’t until 1942—when the institution also changed its name to Geneseo State Teachers College—that bachelor’s degrees were granted. The college changed its name to the State University of New York Teachers College at Geneseo and joined the State University of New York system six years later, in 1948. The institution was also granted the authority to give master’s degrees in education during this period, and by 1951, it was giving out its first graduate degrees.
A public liberal arts institution, Geneseo offers five master’s degrees, twenty-eight undergraduate majors, and twenty-five interdisciplinary minors. In decreasing order of popularity, the most common majors are business, social sciences, education, biology, and psychology.
In the 2021 edition of “The Fiske Guide to Colleges,” authored by Edward B. Fiske, the former education editor of the New York Times, Geneseo is listed as one of 44 “Best Buy Schools.” Twenty public and twenty private schools were listed in the book as “Best Buys,” defined as reasonably priced or affordable with an academic grade of four or five stars.
Incoming first-year students, transfer students, out-of-state students, foreign students, and current Geneseo students can all apply for financial awards and scholarships. SUNY Geneseo has expanded its support for merit-based scholarships. Upon admission, newly enrolled students at Geneseo will automatically be considered for all merit-based scholarships.
