About the University of British Columbia and Award

The University of British Columbia (UBC), established in 1908, stands as the oldest university in British Columbia, Canada, with campuses situated near Vancouver and Kelowna. Bolstered by an impressive annual research budget of $759 million, UBC actively funds over 8,000 projects each year, contributing significantly to the global landscape of academic inquiry.

The Vancouver campus, located approximately 10 km (6 mi) west of downtown Vancouver adjacent to the University Endowment Lands, is home to TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, featuring the world’s largest cyclotron. UBC boasts prestigious research institutions like the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and the Stuart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute. Additionally, in collaboration with the Max Planck Society, UBC established the first Max Planck Institute in North America, focusing on quantum materials. The UBC Library system, one of the largest in Canada, comprises 21 branches and houses over 10 million volumes.

UBC expanded its reach and strengthened its academic presence in British Columbia in 2005 with the purchase of the Okanagan campus in Kelowna. The university’s academic excellence is highlighted by its repeated achievement of outstanding positions in global post-secondary rankings. UBC ranked second in Canada and 44th worldwide in the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities. In the QS World University Rankings, UBC was ranked 34th globally and third in Canada, while UBC was ranked 41st globally and second in Canada in the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. UBC was ranked second in Canada and 35th overall in the 2022–2023 U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking, demonstrating its continued recognition.

UBC is committed to fostering diversity and academic achievement, which is why it established the Outstanding International Student Award for the 2024–2025 academic year.
