About the University of Cambridge and Scholarship

The University of Cambridge, established in 1209, is a prestigious public collegiate research university located in Cambridge, England. It holds the distinction of being the world’s third-oldest university in continuous operation. The university’s foundation can be traced back to the arrival of scholars who migrated from the University of Oxford to Cambridge due to a disagreement with the local townspeople. Although these two ancient English universities are sometimes seen as rivals, they share many common features and are frequently collectively referred to as Oxbridge. In 1231, just 22 years after its inception, the University of Cambridge received royal recognition with a charter granted by King Henry III.

The University of Cambridge comprises 31 semi-autonomous constituent colleges and hosts over 150 academic departments, faculties, and additional institutions that are organized into six schools. Each of the colleges operates as an independent entity within the university, managing its own personnel and policies. All students are required to be affiliated with one of the colleges within the university. Undergraduate education at Cambridge is primarily conducted through weekly small-group supervision in the colleges, complemented by lectures, seminars, laboratory work, and, on occasion, additional supervision provided by the central university faculties and departments.
