About the University of Hull and Scholarship

The University of Hull, established in 1927 as University College Hull, stands as a distinguished public research university in Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Over the years, it has evolved into a dynamic institution with a rich history and a commitment to academic excellence.

The university’s main campus in Hull is home to the Hull York Medical School, a collaborative venture with the University of York, and students benefit from the services provided by Hull University Union. The institution has witnessed notable leadership, with prominent figures such as Lord Middleton, Lord Cohen, Lord Wilberforce, Lord Armstrong, and Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone serving as chancellors. In July 2023, Alan Johnson assumed the role of chancellor, contributing to the university’s governance.

In its journey of expansion, the University of Hull acquired the site of University College Scarborough in 2000, establishing the University of Hull Scarborough Campus. A significant milestone occurred in 2003 when the university purchased the former Humberside University campus adjacent to the main campus, leading to a substantial increase in the Cottingham Road campus’s size. The newly acquired premises became the West Campus, hosting the Hull York Medical School and the relocated business school.

A major refurbishment project commenced in 2012, transforming the Brynmor Jones Library into a modern learning hub. With a budget of £28 million, this initiative aimed to create a state-of-the-art facility suitable for students for years to come and was completed in 2015.

The University of Hull has been an active participant in the cultural life of the city, playing a pivotal role in Hull’s bid to become the UK City of Culture in 2017. The university’s involvement in the planning and execution of various events showcased its commitment to community engagement and cultural enrichment.
