About the University of Manitoba and Bursary

Established in 1877, the University of Manitoba (U of M, Manitoba, or UM) holds the distinction of being the first university in Western Canada. Nestled in the vibrant city of Winnipeg, Manitoba Province, Canada, the university has grown to become the largest in the province and the 17th-largest in the entire country, both in terms of total student enrolment and campus area.

The main campus, located in the Fort Garry neighborhood of southern Winnipeg, serves as the central hub for the University of Manitoba. It boasts a sprawling landscape, complemented by three other major locations: the Bannatyne Campus, the James W. Burns Executive Education Centre, and the William Norrie Centre. The influence of the university extends further with its administration of the French-language affiliate, Université de Saint-Boniface, situated in the Saint Boniface ward of Winnipeg.

Recognized for its status as a top research-intensive institution, the University of Manitoba conducts more research annually than any other university in the region. The competitive academic and research programs consistently rank among the best in the Canadian Prairies, contributing to the university’s reputation as a formidable center for intellectual inquiry.

The impact of research at the University of Manitoba reaches global proportions, with notable contributions such as the creation of canola oil in the 1970s. The university takes pride in its distinguished alumni, a list that includes Nobel Prize recipients, Academy Award winners, Order of Merit recipients, and Olympic medalists. Notably, the University of Manitoba has produced an impressive 99 Rhodes Scholarship recipients as of 2019, surpassing all other universities in Western Canada. The institution also boasts a lineage of government figures, including provincial premiers, Supreme Court justices, and Members of Parliament (MPs).

In the spirit of fostering international collaboration and academic excellence, the University of Manitoba invites applications for the International Bursary Scholarship. This opportunity is open to undergraduate international students who exhibit commendable academic standing and demonstrate financial need. The scholarship program reflects the university’s commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for students pursuing their educational aspirations at this esteemed institution.
