About Victoria University of Wellington and Scholarship

Its Mori name is Te Herenga Waka. Wellington, New Zealand’s Victoria University of Wellington is a public university. It served as a founding institution for the University of New Zealand and was established in 1897 by an act of Parliament.

Although the university provides a wide range of other courses, it is best renowned for its programs in law, the humanities, and several scientific fields. All courses have open first-year enrollment, although some programs—like those in law, criminology, creative writing, architecture, and engineering—restrict enrollment in second years.

Victoria was placed fourth in 2006 and third in 2003, but in both 2012 and 2018, it received the top overall research grade from the New Zealand Government’s Performance Based Research Fund exercise. In the 2020 QS World University Rankings, Victoria was ranked 215th out of the top 500 universities worldwide.

Special students are recognized with the Wellington Kahotea Scholarship. We support candidates who have excelled academically or who have made contributions to their communities through leadership, equity, or culture.

The scholarship package includes a three-year stipend as well as full housing expenses* in the first year at a Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington residence hall. The stipend for students who do not live in a University hall of residence may be distributed equally over the three years or may be weighted more heavily toward the first year.
