The University of Aberdeen is a public research university in Aberdeen, Scotland (Scots: University o’ ‘Aiberdeen; abbreviated as Aberd. in post-nominals; Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Obar Dheathain). King’s College is one of Scotland’s four ancient universities and the fifth-oldest university in the English-speaking world. It was founded in 1495 when William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen and Chancellor of Scotland, petitioned Pope Alexander VI on behalf of James IV, King of Scots, to establish King’s College. In the eighteenth century, the institution participated in the Scottish Enlightenment alongside the universities of St Andrews, Glasgow, and Edinburgh.

Three now primarily ceremonial colleges make up the university: King’s College, Marischal College, and Christ’s College. King’s College and Marischal College, a second institution founded in 1593 as a Protestant rival to the first, were combined to become the university as it is known today in 1860. Particularly Marischal College in the heart of the city and King’s College’s crown spire in Old Aberdeen, the university’s prominent structures serve as icons for all of Aberdeen. There are two campuses; the King’s College campus, which is the most often used of the two, dominates Old Aberdeen, a neighborhood of the city that is located about two miles north of the city center.

Aside from the King’s College Chapel and Quadrangle, the majority of academic buildings at the university were built in the 20th century during a time of tremendous development, even though this is where the institution’s initial campus was founded. Both the School of Medical Sciences and the School of Medicine and Dentistry are located on the university’s Foresterhill campus, which is close to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. One of Europe’s largest health campuses is made up of all of these structures.

The institution’s yearly revenue for 2021–2022 was £260.9 million, with £50.8 million coming from grants and contracts for research and £313.4 million going toward expenditures. According to The Guardian, Aberdeen is routinely rated as one of the top 200 universities in the world and is among the top 20 institutions in the United Kingdom. Aberdeen came up at number 31 globally for social effect in the 2019 Times Higher Education University effect Rankings. Moreover, The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide awarded Aberdeen the Scottish University of the Year for 2019. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework ranked more than 75% of the university’s research as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent.”
