About the University College London and Scholarship
A renowned public research institution in London, England, institution College London (UCL) is a significant component of the Federal University of London. Praise for its outstanding academic reputation aside, UCL is the second-largest university in the United Kingdom by total enrollment and by number of postgraduate students.
Jeremy Bentham’s radical ideas helped UCL, then known as London University, rise to prominence shortly after its founding in 1826. It was noteworthy for being the first in England to have a secular stance and to be the first university established in London, allowing students irrespective of their religious affiliations. UCL’s commitment to diversity was further cemented in 1878 when it became one of the first universities to admit both men and women, continuing a heritage of progressive and equal practices.
Originally planned to be the third university in England, UCL was obliged to alter its name to college in 1836 due to political pressures. Eventually, though, it received a royal charter and became one of the first colleges of the University of London. Although UCL had de facto university status in the 1990s, it only became an official university in 2023. The university has expanded dramatically through strategic mergers, taking in organizations such as the Eastman Dental Institute, the Institute of Neurology, the School of Ophthalmology, the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, and the Institute of Education.
In the fiscal year 2021/22, UCL proved its dedication to research by bringing in £524.9 million from grants and contracts linked to the field, which made up 30% of the university’s overall income. This substantial investment came from funds from the Research Council (£170.4 million) and British charities (£154.4 million). Additionally, £159.3 million in continuous research assistance was given by Research England to enhance UCL’s standing as a leading research institution.

With this scholarship program, UCL is demonstrating its dedication to helping exceptional African graduate students and giving them meaningful chances to both contribute to and gain from the university’s broad academic community.

The scholarships are intended to assist African citizens with good academic and professional certifications who, in the absence of financial aid, would not be able to attend UCL. The scholarship is a one-time award for students registered at the UCL Institute for Global Health’s MSc in Global Health and Development program, who will study there from September to September of the academic year.

Eligibility Criteria for University College London Institute for Global Health – African Graduate Scholarship
Candidates are advised to meet the following prerequisites to be eligible for the University College London Institute for Global Health – African Graduate Scholarship:
- At the time of application, the candidate must be a citizen of an African country and a permanent resident of one. To pursue the MSc in Global Health and Development full-time, the candidate must have applied to and been accepted into UCL.
