About Algoma University and Scholarship

Public university Algoma University, sometimes known as Algoma U or Algoma, has its main campus in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Algoma University is a post-secondary institution that prioritizes teaching and learning while also paying close attention to the needs of Northern Ontario. It provides degree programs in the humanities, sciences, business, and professions. A distinctive objective of Algoma University, which is located on the former grounds of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, is to encourage and support cross-cultural learning among Aboriginal people and other groups. Algoma University also offers satellite programming in the Ontario cities of Timmins and Brampton.

Before June 18, 2008, Laurentian University in Sudbury, which was founded in 1965 and is now known as Algoma University, was an affiliate university of Algoma University. The appropriate enabling statute is the Algoma University Act of 2008.

Chancellor’s Award: $5,000 Renewable:

For international secondary school graduates beginning their first year of undergraduate study at Algoma University, the Chancellor’s Award is a scholarship worth $5,000 every academic year. Candidates must be enrolled in a full-time program (15 credits each term spanning Fall/Winter) to be eligible.

President’s Award: $2,500 Non-Renewable:

For international secondary school graduates beginning their first year of undergraduate study at Algoma University, there is an admission award of $2,500 known as the President’s Award. Candidates must be full-time students (12 credits per term across Fall/Winter) to be eligible.

Dean’s Award: $1,000 Non-Renewable:

For foreign secondary school graduates beginning their first year of study for an undergraduate degree at Algoma University, the Dean’s Award is an admission award worth $1,000. Candidates must be full-time students (12 credits per term across Fall/Winter) to be eligible. 

Award of Excellence: $500 Non-Renewable

International secondary school graduates entering their first year of study for an undergraduate degree at Algoma University are eligible for the Award of Excellence, a $500 entry award. Candidates must be full-time students (12 credits per term across Fall/Winter) to be eligible. The past academic record of a student must have a least B average (or country equivalent).

Algoma University International Scholarships – Eligibility Criteria

Qualifying Criteria:

  • On the first day of courses, international students who are being considered for the following awards must have a temporary residence visa issued under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of Canada as a member of the student class.
  • The Entrance Scholarship is open to all students who must pay the international difference fee, including university transfers, second-degree students, college diploma graduates, and college transfer students.
  • Before beginning their studies at Algoma University, students must fulfill all of their prerequisites within the academic year.
  • There will never be a delay in awarding overseas scholarships. The terms and conditions of admission as well as the scholarship offered for the given year must be accepted by the student.
  • Students enrolling in the Winter or Spring term will be eligible for awards in the subsequent academic year as awards require enrollment across two semesters (Fall/Winter) of an academic year.
  • Only undergraduate degree programs are eligible for entrance scholarships.
  • To be eligible for entry scholarships for the school year 2023–2024, students must get an unconditional admissions offer before July 7, 2023.

These scholarships are not available to nationals of the United States because they are already entitled to a significant tuition discount. For the academic year 2024–25, admission and renewal scholarships are being reviewed and are subject to modification without prior notice.
