Application is now open for the Allison Milner Memorial PhD Scholarship at the University of Queensland. Interested applicants are encouraged to send their applications in before the deadline date.

About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The UQ St Lucia ferry dock, the westernmost stop, and conclusion of the CityCat service, provides transportation to the university. The University of Queensland bus station at Chancellor’s Place in the west connects travelers to Brisbane’s inner west suburbs such as Indooroopilly, Toowong, and Milton; the UQ Lakes busway station in the east, the western terminus of the Eastern Busway, offers services to Brisbane’s inner south suburbs such as Woolloongabba, Carindale, and Mount Gravatt via the Eleanor Schonell Bridge. Translink also runs two bus stations on campus.

In memory of Associate Professor Allison Milner, MATES in Construction created the Allison Milner Memorial PhD Scholarship. From 2013 until her premature demise in 2019, Allison was the National Academic Director of MATES. She was an active researcher who promoted initiatives to lower the high suicide incidence among blue-collar workers, who are primarily males.

Allison and the MATES team place a high priority on research, and this fellowship is a crucial way to help outstanding and committed Ph.D. candidates in their pursuit of that research. Australian blue-collar sectors with a male predominance are the focus of the Ph.D. research funded by the fellowship.

Graduate Australian academics who are working on suicide prevention projects for mostly male, blue-collar sectors in Australia are eligible for Ph.D. scholarships.

Selection Standards

The goal of the PhD scholarship is to aid excellent graduates who are just beginning their research careers. The award specifically funds Ph.D. studies that focus on suicide prevention programs in businesses with a male predominance. This Ph.D. fellowship covers research in male-dominated fields that may involve both male and female employees, their families, or larger communities. The ideas combining the manufacturing, mining, energy, or construction sectors will be given preference.

Research on male-dominated sectors should focus on at least one of the following:

  • Psychological discomfort or suicidality
