Public universities in London and Kent, England, make up the University of Greenwich. Woolwich Polytechnic and Thames Polytechnic were formerly used.

The Old Royal Naval College, together with its sister site on Avery Hill, are both in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and serve as the university’s main campus. In addition, Greenwich has a shared site with a satellite campus in Medway, Kent. The University offers courses in a variety of fields, including engineering, architecture, business, computing, mathematics, education, maritime studies, natural sciences, pharmacy, and the social sciences. Abiy Ahmed and Charles K. Kao, both Nobel laureates, are former students at Greenwich. The Teaching Excellence Framework of the UK government gave it a Silver rating.

The institution was founded at Woolwich in 1891 when Woolwich Polytechnic, the second-oldest polytechnic in the UK, opened its doors. Frank Didden established it, with Quintin Hogg’s help and following his beliefs, and it began accepting students in October 1891. It first mixed education with social and religious functions, much like Hogg’s groundbreaking endeavor in Regent Street, London. According to The Guardian University Guide 2022 league table, the university was rated 94 out of 121 UK institutions.
