About the University of Strathclyde and Program
A professor at the University of Glasgow named John Anderson left a will that led to the establishment of the University of Strathclyde in 1796. He intended to establish a university in Glasgow that would specialize in “Useful Learning,” or applied fields that would advance science and serve society. The institution was renamed Anderson’s University in 1828, a step toward realizing Anderson’s aim of having two universities in Glasgow. To better reflect its legal status, the institution did, however, rename itself the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College in 1887.
Over the years, its name was altered once more: it was renamed the Royal Technical College in 1912 and the Royal College of Science and Technology in 1956. The university prioritized research and instruction in the fields of science and engineering. Undergraduates might choose to finish with degrees from the University of Glasgow or the Royal College of Science and Technology (ARCST) equivalent, the Associate of Science.
According to the Complete University Guide, the University of Strathclyde is well-known and has attained top rankings in several fields as of 2024. It is noteworthy for ranking first in forensic science, second in creative writing, ninth in education, tenth in manufacturing and production engineering, and first in speech and language therapy.
The University of Strathclyde is a part of a consortium made up of seventeen Scottish universities. This consortium receives funding for Ph.D. studentships from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) through the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities (SGSAH). These studentships cover living expenses and tuition at rates set by UK Research & Innovation (UKRI). The University of Strathclyde contributes to these studentships by covering the international component of the tuition cost, as the UKRI grant does not encompass this expense.
It’s important to note that the number of international students recruited each year under the training grant is subject to UKRI regulations, with a maximum limit of 30%.

Students from all around the world are welcome to apply for UKRI funding, which will cover their full stipend as well as their home tuition.
Note: If a student doesn’t meet the above qualifications, they will be labeled as an international student.
Application Procedure for University of Strathclyde Arts and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Training Partnership (AHRC)
As of 1 December 2023, 5 p.m., the Strathclyde closure date, applicants need to have:
- Submitted an online application to the University of Strathclyde’s PhD program. (Online application forms are available from https://www.strath.ac.uk/humanities/graduateschool/, at the bottom of each topic area homepage. Please enter “AHRC DTP” in the “Funding” area of the Strathclyde online application.
- Attach the AHRC DTP Scotland application form as an attachment to their application form to Strathclyde.
- Submitted two academic reference letters with their application.
- Sent an application for AHRC DTP Scotland by email to hass-scholarships@strath.ac.uk
Applicants will be contacted around January 12th if the University chooses to recommend them for the AHRC DTP competition. The Institutional Statement (IS) of support, which will be sent by Strathclyde, must then be uploaded and completed on the SGSAH online application form.
