The University of Adelaide College International Scholarship, Australia 2023/2024

Application is open for the partially funded University of Adelaide College International Scholarship.

About the University of Adelaide and Scholarship

The University of Adelaide, founded on November 6, 1874, was made possible through a generous £20,000 donation from grazier and copper miner Walter Watson Hughes, as well as contributions from Thomas Elder. The inaugural chancellor of the university was Sir Richard Hanson, with Augustus Short serving as the first vice-chancellor. The university’s initial academic offering was the Bachelor of Arts, and teaching commenced in March 1876. John Davidson held the distinction of being the first Hughes professor of English literature and mental and moral philosophy.

The University of Adelaide has a remarkable history of advocating for gender equality in higher education. It was the second English-speaking university globally, following the University of London in 1878, to admit women on an equal basis with men. This historic step occurred in 1881, although women had been studying alongside men from the outset of classes in 1876 and were equally eligible for all academic honors and prizes.

Edith Emily Dornwell became the university’s first female graduate and also the first person in Australia to earn a Bachelor of Science (BSc., 1885). Notably, Laura Fowler (MB, 1891) graduated as Australia’s first female surgeon, and Ruby Davy (B.Mus., 1907; D.Mus., 1918) achieved the distinction of being the first Australian woman to receive a doctorate in music.
