About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The University of Queensland (UQ, or Queensland University) is an Australian public research university based principally in Brisbane, the state capital. UQ, founded by the Queensland government in 1909, is one of the six sandstone universities, an informal title for each state’s oldest institution. UQ is also a founder member of edX, the Group of Eight, and the worldwide research-intensive Association of Pacific Rim Universities.

In the 1870s, proposals for a university in Queensland were made. In 1874, a Royal Commission led by Sir Charles Lilley proposed that a university be established immediately. In an economy dominated by primary industries, those opposed to a university argued that technical education—rather than academic education—was more important. Supporters of the university separated themselves from Oxford and Cambridge in response to this criticism, offering an alternative framework centered on the mid-western states of the United States.

Five faculties should be included in a new university, according to advice from a second Royal Commission in 1891: arts, law, medicine, science, and applied science. Budgets for education in Queensland were frequently given a low priority, although basic education was more crucial than secondary and vocational education in a colony with a literacy rate of 57% in 1861.

Queensland has a high emphasis on science, medical, and technology research. UQ Professor Ian Frazer pioneered the creation of cervical cancer vaccinations, Gardasil and Cervarix, as part of the university’s scientific advancement. According to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, UQ has assumed the lead in various areas of cancer research.

According to the Commonwealth Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia 2012 National Report, UQ has more researchers working in research fields that the ERA has rated as being above world standard than any other Australian university (22 broad fields), and more than any other university in Australia. UQ’s research in biomedical and clinical health sciences, technology, engineering, biological sciences, chemical sciences, environmental sciences, and physical sciences was rated as superior to the global average (rating 5).
