About Cardiff University and Scholarship

Cardiff University, known in Welsh as Prifysgol Caerdydd, stands as a distinguished public research institution in Cardiff, Wales. Its rich history dates back to 1883 when it was established as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire. It played a pivotal role in the founding of the University of Wales in 1893.

Over the years, the university underwent several name changes, including University College, Cardiff in 1972, and later merged with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology in 1988, evolving into University of Wales College, Cardiff, and subsequently the University of Wales, Cardiff in 1996. In 1999, it adopted the operating name Cardiff University, officially becoming its legal name in 2005, marking its status as an independent university with the authority to award its degrees.
