About London Business School and Scholarship
London Business School, tracing its roots to its founding as the ‘London Graduate School of Business Studies’ in 1964, has grown into a distinguished institution that stands as a beacon of excellence in business education. Dr. Arthur Earle, the school’s first dean, guided the institution through a revolutionary transition. It cemented its position in the academic scene in 1965 when it was registered as a firm and received accreditation for having qualified lecturers from the University of London.
Visionary efforts characterized the school’s early years, such as the 1966 introduction of the Senior Executive Program and the Executive Development Program. The first full-time MSc degree was introduced in the same year, marking a significant milestone. Sheila Cross made history by being the first female student, demonstrating the school’s dedication to diversity and inclusivity. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation supported the first-ever MSc program outside of the United States, the Sloan Fellowship MSc program, which enrolled 17 students in 1968.
There were more significant events that followed, such as the founding of the first PhD program in 1969. A pivotal point in the school’s history was reached in 1970 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II dedicated the Regent’s Park site. When the first Ph.D. was granted in 1974, women’s representation increased significantly and surpassed 15% of the student body.
In 1983, the institution launched its first part-time MBA program, carrying on its tradition of innovation. Official recognition came in 1986 when the school was incorporated by Royal Charter and given the name London Business School, enabling it to award degrees. The school received the Queen’s Award for Export in 1992 in recognition of its exceptional contribution to international education services. The school first offered the Masters in Finance program in 1993. In 2001, it collaborated with Columbia Business School to develop the EMBA-Global degree program.
With the establishment of the Dubai campus in 2007, the school increased its reach internationally by providing executive education and MBA programs. In 2009, the school initiated two groundbreaking programs: the EMBA-Global Asia, in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong and Columbia Business School, and the Masters in Management program. The acquisition of Marylebone Town Hall in 2012 laid the foundation for expanded teaching facilities, resulting in the unveiling of “The Sammy Ofer Centre” in 2017.
Facilities at the London Business School, including a sports center, restaurant, cafes, and a dedicated library, contribute to the vibrant campus community. The Sainsbury Wing, featuring 100-student amphitheater rooms, serves as the hub for MBA classrooms.
