About the University of Leicester and Scholarship

The University of Leicester (/lstr/ i LEST-r) is an English public research university located in Leicester. The main campus is located south of the city center, next to Victoria Park. The forerunner to the institution, institution College, Leicester, was granted university status in 1957.

In 2021/22, the university earned £339.4 million, of which £64 million came from research grants. The institution is well-known for inventing genetic fingerprinting and for helping to fund the discovery and DNA identification of King Richard III’s bones in Leicester. After dismissing tenured faculty members, the institution faced a worldwide academic boycott in 2021. In 2015, new university students earned the 42nd highest UCAS Points in the UK, with 374 points (the equivalent to BBC at A Level and BC at AS Level). According to the Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, over 2% of Leicester’s undergraduates attend private schools.

The university is well-regarded for the quality of its instruction. The Quality Assurance Agency has assessed 19 subject areas as “Excellent,” including 14 consecutive grades of 22 points or higher dating back to 1998, six of which were maximum marks.

In the 2005, 2006, and 2007 National Student Surveys, Leicester was ranked top among mainstream institutions in England for overall student satisfaction. In 2008, it was second only to Cambridge, and in 2009, it was equal first.

The Times Higher Education recognized the University as the University of the Year in 2008. It is also the first university in history to have won a Times Higher Education award seven years in a row. Previously, the Times Good University Guide and The Guardian routinely put the university among the top 20 in the United Kingdom. The university was placed 25th in The Sunday Times Good University Guide in 2017. The first eleven Citizens of Change arrived on campus in 1921.

The university has astrophysics, biochemistry, and genetics research units. Sir Alec Jeffreys pioneered and perfected the methods employed in genetic fingerprinting in 1984 at the University of Leicester. It also contains Europe’s largest academic space research center, where space probes, most notably the Mars Lander Beagle 2, were created in partnership with the Open University.

One hundred years later, the school continues to honor its legacy through its one-of-a-kind ‘Citizens of Change’ Scholarship. They want to hear about your plans to make the world a better place, whether you’re an innovator, an activist, an entrepreneur, or a dreamer.
