About the University of Hamburg and Scholarship
Hamburg, Germany’s University of Hamburg (German: Universität Hamburg, usually abbreviated as UHH) is a public research university. The Hamburg Colonial Institute (Hamburgisches Kolonialinstitut), the Academic College (Akademisches Gymnasium), and the former General Lecture System (Allgemeines Vorlesungswesen) were combined to form it on March 28, 1919. The primary campus is situated in Rotherbaum’s central district, and the city-state is home to other connected research centers and institutes. UHH has seven Nobel Prize winners and one Wolf Prize winner among its members.
To give master’s degree students the chance to learn about and engage with the excellent research being done within the cluster, the Cluster of Excellence seeks to award scholarships. The cluster, which focuses on investigating the dynamics of complex systems, connects ideas and approaches for researching controlled quantum systems at several scales, including bigger molecules, solid-state systems, and nanosystems.
The scholarships are sponsored with €934 per month for 12 months, beginning at the earliest possible date of 1 April 2024. After the 12-month scholarship has ended, the Cluster can be contacted to discuss additional financing opportunities. The research will be carried out at the Universität Hamburg’s Departments of Physics and Chemistry, or, if applicable, at European XFEL, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), or Max-PlanckInstitut für Struktur und Dynamik der Materie (MPSD).
Master’s degree & research areas
The scholarships help students meet the academic requirements for the applicable master’s programs at Universität Hamburg, such as chemistry, nanoscience, and physics. In addition to completing the necessary master’s degree programs, scholarship recipients are eligible to work on elective research projects related to the Cluster of Excellence “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter.” Students can get a fascinating overview of the Bahrenfeld campus’s infrastructure, research groups, and research program through the Cluster.
Photon science, quantum physics, theoretical physics, nanostructure and solid state physics, physical chemistry, biochemistry, coherent X-ray imaging, femtosecond and attosecond laser spectroscopy, X-ray physics at Free-Electron Lasers, ultrafast science, atomic, molecular, and optical physics, quantum gases, nanochemistry, and machine learning are some examples of scientific topics for projects.
