About Cranfield University and Scholarship
On what was previously the Royal Air Force facility of RAF Cranfield, Cranfield University was established in 1946 as the College of Aeronautics. Roxbee Cox, later Lord Kings Norton, who served as the college’s first governor in 1945 as well as the board’s vice-chair and, starting in 1962, chair, played a significant part in the establishment of the institution. He spearheaded the effort to diversify the institution, which resulted in the founding of the Cranfield University School of Management in 1967. He also petitioned successfully for a royal charter and the authority to grant degrees. He served as the Cranfield Institute of Technology’s first chancellor from 1969 when these were given, until 1997.
The Cranfield campus is located in the Bedfordshire community of Cranfield, around 50 miles (80 km) north of central London. The closest major cities are Milton Keynes and Bedford, both with a center that is around 8 miles (13 km) distant. About 48 kilometers (30 miles) east lies Cambridge.
In the 2022 QS World University Rankings for mechanical, aeronautical, and manufacturing engineering, Cranfield University was rated 27th globally and 5th in the UK. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) for Aeronautical, Mechanical, Chemical, and Manufacturing Engineering, Cranfield University is placed ninth in the UK.
With 81% of its research activities scoring a 3* or above, it is placed second in terms of research power and sixth in terms of research output quality.
