About Goldsmiths, University of London and Scholarship

The Goldsmiths’ College, often known as the Goldsmiths’ University of London, is an English research institution that is a part of the University of London. The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths established it as The Goldsmiths’ Technical and Recreational Institute in New Cross, London, in 1891. It was renamed Goldsmiths’ College after being bought by the University of London in 1904, and it focuses on the humanities, social sciences, design, and computers. The old Royal Naval School was located on the grounds of the campus’s centerpiece, the Richard Hoggart Building, which was first erected in 1792.

According to Quacquarelli Symonds (2021), Goldsmiths is listed in the top 50 for Performing Arts, Anthropology, and Sociology, and is placed 12th in Communication and Media Studies, 15th in Art and Design, and 15th overall. At the undergraduate and graduate levels, the institution will have over 10,000 students in 2020. 37% of students are international, and 52% of undergraduates are mature students—those who were older than 21 when they first enrolled in college. The majority of Goldsmiths’ students—about one-third—attend graduate school. In south-east London’s New Cross, which has a thriving art and music scene, is where Goldsmiths is located.

The main structure, the Richard Hoggart Building, was initially created by the architect John Shaw, Jr. (1803-1870) as a school (opened in 1844). Academic conferences and seminars are held at the historic Deptford Town Hall building, which Henry Vaughan Lanchester and Edwin Alfred Rickards built and which was purchased in 1998. In addition, Goldsmiths has constructed several additional contemporary structures to expand the campus, including the RIBA Award-winning Rutherford Building, finished in 1997, the Will Alsop-designed Ben Pimlott Building, finished in 2005, and the Professor Stuart Hall Building, formerly known as the New Academic Building, finished in 2010.

The Media and Communications department at Goldsmiths was rated second in the UK and ninth overall in 2017. However, by 2020, this department’s ranking has dropped to 18th in the UK. In terms of overall national rankings, Goldsmiths is somewhere around the 70th spot, while in the TEF, Goldsmiths received the lowest possible grade of Bronze.
