About the University of Leeds and Scholarship
Founded in 1874 as the Yorkshire College of Science, the University of Leeds is a prestigious public research university situated in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It has a long and illustrious history. It has developed throughout time into a preeminent center for education dedicated to cutting-edge research and academic achievement.
The Yorkshire College was renamed Yorkshire College after it underwent significant changes, including a merger with the Leeds School of Medicine in 1884, when it was first established as the Yorkshire College of Science. An important turning point in its history was its subsequent absorption into the federal Victoria University in 1887, which brought it into line with prestigious establishments such as University College Liverpool (now the University of Liverpool) and Owens College (now the University of Manchester). King Edward VII granted the University of Leeds a royal charter in 1904, establishing the university as a prestigious academic establishment.
The University of Leeds has received recognition for its research capabilities, as demonstrated by its joint ranking of 20th place (with the University of Exeter) for research quality (GPA) among multi-faculty institutions in the UK and its outstanding eighth place ranking for Research Power in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. Employers ranked the institution as the 10th most sought-after British university for graduates in terms of employability between 2014 and 2015.
The institution is still making an impact on the world stage, ranking 153rd in the Times Higher Education World Institution Rankings for 2021 and 86th in the QS World University Rankings for 2023. Leeds is further recognized for its dedication to offering a life-changing educational experience as The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide named it the 2017 University of the Year.
