About Australian National University and Scholarship

In Australia, calls to create a national university date back to the year 1900. The ANU was given land at the base of Black Mountain in the Walter Burley Griffin city plans when Canberra’s site was chosen as the nation’s capital in 1908. The Australian National University Act of 1946 was eventually passed by the Chifley administration on August 1, 1946, after planning for the institution was interrupted by World War II but restarted with the establishment of the Department of Post-War Reconstruction in 1942.

Eminent Australian academics like Sir Howard Florey, who co-developed medicinal penicillin, Sir Mark Oliphant, an expert in nuclear physics who participated in the Manhattan Project, and Sir Keith Hancock, the Chichele Professor of Economic History at Oxford, all returned from abroad to join the university. A New Zealander named Sir Raymond Firth, an anthropology professor at LSE who had previously lived and worked for a while in Australia was also a member of the group.

The RSSS houses schools and centers for history, philosophy, sociology, politics and international relations, demography, Arab and Islamic studies, and European studies in addition to the Australian National Centre for Latin American Studies, the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research, and the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods.
