About the University of Melbourne and Scholarship
Hugh Childers, the Auditor-General and Finance Minister, suggested building the University of Melbourne in his first Budget Speech on November 4, 1852. Childers set aside £10,000 for the creation of a university. On January 22, 1853, an act of incorporation created the university and gave it the authority to award degrees in the humanities, law, medicine, and music. The statute established a £9,000 yearly endowment, and that year, buildings received a special £20,000 grant. The State Library’s foundation stone was also placed on July 3, 1854, along with this one. Three professors led the first classes in 1855; they were all Irishmen like the university’s first chancellor, Redmond Barry.
There were sixteen students, however, only four of them received graduation certificates. On October 3, 1855, Sir Charles Hotham, the Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Victoria, formally inaugurated the original structures.
At the Parkville site, a law school was founded in 1857, and a faculty of engineering and a school of medicine followed in 1861 and 1862, respectively. The first residential colleges for the university, split among the four main Christian religions, were established on the northern part of the campus in 1872. Redmond Barry (after Sir Redmond), the first chancellor, served in that capacity until his passing in 1880. The riches generated by Victoria’s gold rush allowed for the university’s founding.
The organization was created to have a “civilizing influence” during a period of significant population increase and economic expansion. The entrance of women in 1881 was seen as a victory for the more traditional ruling council. In 1883, Julia ‘Bella’ Guerin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, making her the first woman to do so from an Australian university.
There are 11 academic departments in the university, some of which have graduate schools. The university has Australia’s lowest and greatest overall attrition and retention rates, respectively. The institution has one of the toughest entrance standards in the nation, with its undergraduate students’ median ATAR in 2009 being 94.05.
At the University of Melbourne, fifty percent of the Premier’s VCE Top All-Round High Achievers enrolled. For bachelor’s degree applications in Australia, an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is often necessary. Guaranteed entrance scores for undergraduate degrees in 2019 were: 70 for agriculture, 85 for arts, 96 for biomedicine, 94 for commerce, 85 for design, 85 for science, and 85 for oral health (just suggestive). Fine arts and music were not relevant.
The University of Melbourne is launching the Masson Travel Award for International Students for the academic year 2023–2024 to assist the education of exceptional students in Australia. To finance travel to international conferences, including those held in Australia, as well as overseas travel for collaborative purposes, the program is available to PhD students.

Masson Travel Award – Eligibility Criteria
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Masson Travel Award at the University of Melbourne:
- All nationalities are eligible.
- Acceptable Subjects or Courses: Coursework for a Ph.D. in science and math
- Admissible Criteria: Applicants must fulfill the requirements listed below to be eligible:
- Enlist as a PhD student.
- Be confident in your eligibility.
- Travel before the deadline for your maximum course duration and before you turn in your thesis.
- Students who haven’t obtained any other trip prizes may be given preference.
- Admission Requirements: Before enrolling, applicants must confirm that they meet the entry requirements for the program they have selected.
- Language Requirement: Students must have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no band lower than 6.0 to fulfill the English requirements (only for foreign candidates).
Selection Criteria
The award is given to qualified students who are ranked highest by the selection committee based on the following criteria:
- Who will benefit academically the most; Who has made the strongest case for assistance on the application; and
- Receive the reward that will help their study the most.
- Students who haven’t previously won any trip rewards may receive preference.
- Other accolades that contenders have won are taken into consideration when choosing the winner of this award.
