About the University of Groningen and Scholarship
The University of Groningen, often known as UG or Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (abbreviated as RUG), is a public research university in the Dutch city of Groningen with more than 30,000 students. The institution was established in 1614, making it one of the most famous and historic universities in the Netherlands and the second-oldest in the nation (after Leiden). Leading rating tables routinely place the university among the top 100 institutions in the world. RUG is placed third in the Netherlands in the 2022 Aggregate Ranking of Top Universities.
The University of Groningen offers more than 175-degree programs, nine graduate schools, 27 research centers, and faculties. Several members of the Dutch royal family, several politicians, the first president of the European Central Bank, a secretary general of NATO, Johann Bernoulli, Aletta Jacobs, four Nobel laureates, nine Spinoza Prize winners, one Stevin Prize winner, and nine other people are among the university’s alumni and faculty.
The Regional Assembly of the city of Groningen and the Ommelanden, or surrounding area, proposed the establishment’s founding as a college in 1614. Theology, Law, Medicine, and Philosophy were the four faculties.
In 1615, The Estates of the City and County of Groningen approved the school’s coat of arms. It consists of the provincial arms and the shortened phrases Verbum Domini Lucerna Pedibus Nostris (VER/BVM/DNI LV/CER/NA) engraved on an open book. A golden crown with four pearls and five leaves adorns the shield’s top.
For international students, there are fully financed scholarships called Eric Bleumink Scholarships. These scholarships are exclusively available for master’s degrees. The University of Groningen Scholarship includes coverage for tuition, books, overseas travel expenses, sustenance, and health insurance. Young scientists and gifted persons from underdeveloped countries are given scholarships through the Eric Bleumink Fund. The scholarships cover either a one-year or two-year Master’s program. So, before February, only applicants who have received a (conditional) admission offer for a master’s degree are eligible to apply. The applicant should complete a master’s request for a program by December 1 to provide the admission office enough time to process the request.

Eric Bleumink Scholarships – Eligibility Criteria
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Eric Bleumink Scholarships at the University of Groningen:
- English is a required language.
- All nations in the world are eligible.
- Possess outstanding academic standing, ideally as attested by letters of recommendation
- Have been granted conditional admission to the desired program.
- Have earned good grades during their undergraduate or bachelor’s studies;
- Possess outstanding English language skills by the program’s entrance standards.
- Be able to participate in the full program and be accessible for the entire duration of the program
- Have no other way of funding the aforementioned study
Application Process for Eric Bleumink Scholarships
